Floating on Air

Being the adventurous girl that I am, many people do not know that I have a fear of heights, although the Husband calls it a weird kind of fear considering that I ski on mountains and fly on a yearly basis. However, the truth about my fear is that I become afraid when I can actually see how high I am.

So when my family decided to head to Cappadocia for the summer holidays, my dad told me about it being a famous hot air balloon spot. People from all over the world would come to fly with just a basket, a balloon and fire (to create hot air). That doesn’t sound safe now, does it? I had nightmares about the fire being too hot that the balloon just...pops!

But of course, my dad tells me that we have to go for a ride because it’s not every day that we go to Cappadocia which is in Turkey! Besides, it’s bucket-list material; 100 things you have to do before you die. I also found out that the rides are fully booked throughout the summer and we were extremely lucky!

Before heading off to Turkey, I saw my cousin as well as other fellow bloggers challenging themselves by doing the things they most feared or commit to the changes they want to see in themselves. I later found out that they had something in common—they were all inspired by P1—the brand that constantly challenges itself to be the best in serving their customers. The spirit of P1 had enticed me to get out of my comfort zone. The spirit of game changing had inspired me in my journey.

I was reminded then of the missed opportunities that I’ve had before when traveling, due to fear. I haven’t gone scuba diving because of my fear of fish. I haven’t gone bungee jumping or skydiving or even paragliding in the Alps even though I’ve had numerous opportunities. All because of fear.

That’s when I realized: All I need is to face my fear. This was my game-changer! So, I decided that I needed to overcome my fear of heights and GET ON THAT FLOATING BASKET!

So, on my second day in Cappadocia, I was ready to go by 4.30AM. There was a van waiting at the hotel lobby. They brought us for a light breakfast outdoors as we watched a few hot air balloons fired up and some even began to fly. After taking a few pictures in the dark, a bus came to take us to where our hot air balloon is being set up.

And it’s HUGE! You can fit 20 people in there. And there’s a trained pilot as well! The balloons are nothing like in the movie UP. There was nothing to worry about.

I began forgetting my fear when I was excited by how huge everything was. It was way beyond what I had imagined. My siblings and I even took turns to take super cool photos. By the time we had to climb into the basket, I was already calm and having so much fun!

Being up there, I thought about how I’m always seen as adventurous. How I’m always up for something different and challenging. People usually tell me that I seem so confident. But the truth is, I’m just built like that. I take deep breaths. And that’s it! It’s so natural to me that I can’t describe how I do it. I’m an adrenaline junkie. I love the fear. Overcoming it is what gives me satisfaction. It makes me feel like I’m truly living my life.

The ride was very smooth and easy. There was none of that stomach churning feeling nor was there any dizzy spell. Because it goes up very slowly, I didn’t even feel the height. At one point, our pilot informed that we have reached 1000m above ground! And I didn’t even feel the slightest fear! It was truly magnificent!

The view was so beautiful as well. Cappadocia is famous for its unique rock formations and from up there, we could see everything; the fairy chimneys, the valley, the flat surfaced mountains and the colourful grounds.

I experienced something very different! It was truly an eye-opening experience and by just remembering the beautiful skyline and scenery from the hot air balloon ride gives me the confidence I always needed. It was a huge game changer for me!

Fear exists. It will not disappear. But don’t let it stop you from living your life to the fullest. I’ve already planned for my scuba-diving license as well as a bungee-jumping and sky-diving session. I’m changing my game and stepping out of my comfort zone, thanks to P1, my inspiration!
